Western Digital My Passport Pro
Space. As a PC user, I’m always looking for more space to store for my files, music, images and movies. As a Mac user, finding compatible and reasonably priced storage is another story. WD have come the party with the WD My Passport Pro.
Encased in an aluminium shell, the My Passport Pro is not only nice to look at, compact and easy to use, but it’s also fast at transferring files from your Mac to the drive itself. Powered by Thunderbolt with a convenient built in cord, the My Passport Pro is the perfect storage companion when you are on the go. Featuring either 2 x 2TB or 2 x 4TB drives in the casing, users can chose how their data is stored and where it is stored.
As mentioned above, the My Passport Pro consists of two hard drives in the casing. It’s sturdy and pleasant on the eye. The drive also features its own cooling and ventilation system. On one side there are a series of small openings to allow air to circulate around the drives. On the other side there is a small fan which will activate if the drives get to hot. The casing remains cool to the touch for the better part of the time when in use.
For convenience, the My Passport Pro comes with a built-in cord meaning that there is no need to take additional cords or power supplies when you are on the go. The cord fits neatly around the body of the casing. The benefit of this built in cord means that you can use this drive anywhere and everywhere without the need to locate a power point to plug in an AC adapter to power up the drive.
The only down fall in this set us is that there are no other Thunderbolt ports to allow you to connect other Thunderbolt devices to the drive at the same time and if your Mac isn’t Thunderbolt capable, you won’t be able to use this drive.
How it works.
The My Passport Pro runs of bus powered, which means the drive gets it power from the device it is plugged in to. In this instance, your Macbook. It really is as simple as removing it from the box, unwrapped the cord from around the casing, plugging it in and way you go. It really is incredibly easy!
The drive comes factory formatted in RAID 0. Raid 0 in laymans terms is your stock standard drive format that allows you to transfer and retrieve data. It is fast and allows users to just ‘drop and drag’ their data for the Mac’s hard drive on to the My Passport Pro. You can choose what drive you wish to store the info on at your discretion. However, the one of the two drives can be set for RAID 1 to allow for a back-up or mirroring of data to be done. A carbon copy if you please. This is if benefit if one of the drives (very unlikely) was to fail. You would have a mirrored copy on the other drive and be able to access all of the files which were stored on the failed drive.
Setting up the drive into RAID 1 can all be done under the ‘disk utility’ on the iOS with the supplied WD Drive Utility software which is supplied.
If you can save a file to your hard drive, you can save a file to the Mt Passport pro! It’s as easy as chasing the destinations as to where you want the file to be saved to and hit save! It really can’t get any simpler.

How it performed
The My Passport Pro was designed to allow people who need to keep a lot of data or files, but don’t want to keep it on their MacBook’s hard drive. This is especially beneficial is the file sizes are large. Files such as movies, hi res images and audio files are best suited on the My Passport Pro to free up space on your hard drive and to keep them all in one central location.
We were pleasantly surprised to see how fast a folder of random music files transferred from the desktop to the My Passport pro. Just over 1.5GB of data went from the desktop onto the external drive in a matter of seconds! Its lightning fast! Expect to get on average 200MBps when transferring (writing) from your Mac onto the drive and around the same speed when reading from the drive. This will depend on the size of the file you are moving.
We tried more movies, images, music all of varying file sizes transferring them backwards and forwards and each time we got the same result – lightning fast data transfer! The My Passport Pro isn’t the fast external drive on the market, but for its size and being bus powered, it sure is up there.
If you have a Thunderbolt capable Windows machine, you can use this drive as well; however you will only be able to read the data (which has been saved in a compatible format from the Mac). Data cannot be saved to the drive from a Window’s machine. The My Passport Pro is primarily an Apple product only and it has been marketed this way.
- All in one compact unit
- Lightning fast
- Reasonably priced
- No other data port plugs available.
The WD My Passport Pro is not only spacious, fast and easy to use; it’s also practical and great value for money! It may not be the fastest external drive for sale, but its transferring speeds for both writing and reading of data are incredibly impressive. For and every day user wanting to free up space on their Mac hard drive or for backing up data, this is the perfect device for you Mac users.
