Deadpool Pinball DLC
There something magical about when Zen Studios gets a new licensed property to play with. Each and every time they’ve released a new table for Pinball FX 2, Zen Pinball and Marvel Pinball they manage to pull off a pretty impressive feat: create a pinball table dedicated to an existing property that is both fun and true to that property. It couldn’t be an easy task, but the team at Zen have managed to do it with everything from Star Wars and Marvel Comics properties, to newer properties like Ms Splosion Man and Plants Vs Zombies.
Their latest pinny is based on Marvel’s ‘Deadpool’, with Wade Wilson getting his own table after he harassed several Zen Studios staff members for months on end. Now that the table is here, Deadpool his shooting his mouth off, saying it’s the greatest pinball table ever made, and “better than the Iron Man table”. Is it though? Or has Wade really gone off the deep end with this one?
Visually, Deadpool’s table looks great, with the table resembling Deadpool’s erm, humble apartment. The floor is cheap and damaged wood, with a number of Deadpool’s possessions adorned along the walls. As to be expected of a pinball table, there are a number of ramps, and fans of Deadpool’s comics will be delighted to see Deadpool’s mech making an appearance (which also has its own mission to unlock!) at the top of one of the ramps. The centre of the table features some very stylish Deadpool artwork, and there’s even a pinball table inside the pinball table (which Deadpool remarks on frequently).
In terms of gameplay and missions, Deadpool doesn’t put out easily. It’s one of Zen Studios more difficult tables, and not for the faint of heart. Plants Vs Zombies may have been accessible with its extremely friendly ramps and shots (the real challenge was in getting a high score), but Deadpool can be merciless at times, and even starting his missions can be quite difficult. When you do though, it’s all classic Deadpool, with Wade delivering some hilarious lines and getting into situations only he could. Lil’ Deadpool makes an appearance, as does Blind Al and Weasel, making for an experience Deadpool fans will love if they can get the hang of this somewhat difficult table.
It would be a disservice to not mention the voice acting of Nolan North, who was hand-picked by Deadpool to represent him as they do indeed sound very alike. North did a tremendous job voicing Deadpool in the Deadpool video game developed by High Moon Studios last year, and North does yet another fantastic job slipping into the red suit and recording booth again. Some of Deadpool’s lines are hilarious and saw me laughing out loud as I was playing the table, particularly the line where Deadpool expresses his desire for Zen to make an adults-only pinball game so that he can cuss without it being censored. Deadpool also takes the time to insult other Marvel characters and promote himself and other Zen Studios products (for a paycheck). The comedic approach taken by Zen and Deadpool to co-develop a light-hearted but challenging table is refreshing when compared to other tables (that Thor guy really takes life too seriously!), which are more serious in tone.
- Nolan North!
- Light-hearted and hilarious
- May take some learning for more inexperienced pinball enthusiasts
Deadpool pinball offers a more obscure (though still popular) Marvel character his rightful turn in the spotlight. Deadpool is challenging, unique and downright fun to play, and a must-have for fans of both Marvel and Deadpool. Now we just need a Punisher table!
