Review: Powercube Extended USB
Having an office full of gaming consoles, computers and recording gear here at Sticky Trigger is a lot of fun, but it often leads to complicated and messy cord setups. With constant swapping as well as plugging in and out of power cords, we are always on the lookout for solutions to our cluttered desk area. One product that looks to meet our needs is the PowerCube Extended USB, a cube with power outlets and 2 USB outlets.

A great deal of households in Australia have rooms with only two power boards, and only two outlets per board. Having only 4 devices plugged into a room is extremely dated, so a great deal of us buy power boards to make up for the lack of outlets. The problem here is that a great deal of power boards picked up at your local Coles, Woolworths or Bunnings just barely meet the Australian safety standards (they must be fitted with an overload protection device). Having four outlets in a row also doesn’t cater for devices with large or differently-angled plugs – something as simple as a Nintendo 3DS charger can hog up space on your power board, meaning you have to sacrifice an additional outlet to charge just one device.
This is where the PowerCube Extended USB comes in handy. With a five foot cord and multiple sides, you’re able to connect multiple devices to the PowerCube without sacrificing outlets or cramping your office space.
The PowerCube Extended USB comes with the PowerCube itself, as well as a mounting dock and a cable fix, so you can mount the PowerCube Extended USB to any surface and have tidy cords. Having the PowerCube mounted means sacrificing one of its sides, however you don’t have to mount the PowerCube if you don’t want to, as it sits along the top of any surface just fine.
The two USB outlets output 2100 mA, meaning your devices will charge faster than through a lot of other devices – perhaps even your standard charger. You can also plug a PowerCube into another Powercube, so long as you don’t exceed 15 amps total load.
We’ve had the Powercube Extended USB installed to the underside of Sticky Trigger’s office PC desk for a few weeks now, and in that time we’ve saved time and frustration swapping our various devices in and out of it. Not only that, but our backs are feeling better too, as we no longer have to dive under the desk to find a vacant power outlet!
There aren’t any real downsides to the PowerCube Extended USB, aside from the fact that mounting it sacrifices one of its outlets. Apart from that it’s a near-perfect product.
Overall we’re very impressed by the Powercube Extended USB. It offers an attractive and tidy solution to power cord clutter, and having it mounted to the underside or side of a desk is a convenience too hard to pass up. A must-have for offices and studies.
