Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within
It’s no secret that I love Zen Studios’ series of Pinball games. I quite often call them “the next evolution of pinball” as some of the tables not only present some of the most realistic-looking pinball games ever created in video games, but also gameplay that pinball fans could have only dreamt of until now.
The latest addition to Pinball FX 2 (Xbox 360) and Zen Pinball 2 (PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U), and Zen Pinball HD (Apple and Android) is ‘Star Wars Pinball: Heroes Within’, which adds not three, but four awesome new Star Wars-themed pinball tables to your collection. Each one is an instant classic, and will appeal to hardcore and casual Star Wars and pinball fans.
First up, is the Han Solo table, which as you may have guessed, is dedicated to the lovable scoundrel bounty hunter that is Han Solo. The table combines both the Millenium Falcon and a few elements from the Cantina on Mos Eisley, including the wonderfully catchy Cantina music. The voice acting isn’t sampled from the movies, but are instead provided by a very Harrison Ford-sounding voice actor. The ramps aren’t too difficult to hit, and the table can change depending on what missions (if any) are currently active. One such mission involved Chewbacca fixing a problem with the Millenium Falcon, and saw the animated characters of Han and Chewy exchanging dialogue (and Wookie roars) and Chewbacca stomping on a “faulty” bumper, which then sank into the table, allowing the player to then shoot past the obstacles and onto ramps for extra points.
Next, is the Droids table, dedicated to one of cinema’s earliest bromances, R2D2 and C3PO. The table is based on the inside of the Jawa Sandcrawler, which I’m sure you guys remember is the enormous vehicle/fortress that the Jawa’s traversed Tatooine inside of. Similarly to the Han Solo table, the character dialogue is awesome and the soundtrack is too.
Thirdly, is the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope table. Dedicated to the first Star Wars film released in cinema, The Episode IV table’s design features locations and characters that feature in the film, such as Tatooine, Mos Eisley and the Death Star. There’s a hidden area with an inverted set of flippers, and the missions are based on key events from the film. The first one is Princess Leia stealthily avoiding Stormtroopers and Darth Vader identical to the film. Shooting certain ramps at certain times counts as a successful attempt to sneak past Stormtroopers. Another mission involved flying through the Death Star’s trenches and hitting multiple Tie Fighters with your ball. It’s extremely difficult, but boy is it fun!
Last, but not least, is the Masters of the Force table, which is dedicated to the greatest force users in the Star Wars films. Master Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi, Qui Gon Jinn, The Emperor (Darth Sidius), Count Dooku, and Darth Maul all feature on the table, each with their own speech and missions. Towards the middle of the table, though on opposite sides, are the Jedi and Sith Holocrons. A “Holocron” (short for holographic chronicle) stores vast amounts of data, including the force techniques and practises of their respective factions, so you can understand the importance of unlocking these Holocrons. As one side of the table is Sith and the other is Jedi, the table frequently uses contrast and bold colours in its design. It’s gorgeous to look at, and as with all the other tables, is a real treat for Star Wars and Zen Pinball fans.
- Brilliantly designed tables. They all look amazing and make for excellent gameplay.
- Fantastic Star Wars atmosphere brought about by character dialogue, missions and soundtrack.
- Accessible, yet still a challenge.
The Heroes Within collection of tables is yet another instant classic installment of DLC for Zen Pinball 2, Pinball FX 2 and Zen Pinball HD. The tables are up there with my personal favourites (Epic Quest and Plants Vs Zombies) and should not be missed by anyone who has a Zen Studios pinball game.
