Soul Calibur II HD Online
I remember Soul Calibur 2‘s release like it was yesterday. I remember the hype about each console version having a guest character, and how it fueled rivalries between friends that were settled on the battlefields and arenas in the game upon its release. Soul Calibur 2 was one of the best games in the series, and now it has received the HD treatment that Soul Calibur received before it. Welcome back to the stage of history.
Soul Calibur 2 HD (celebrating it’s 10th anniversary!) is not only one of the best 3D fighters ever created, but it has really benefited from its HD conversion. The characters and arenas all look gorgeous, and the game looks fantastic in widescreen. Every edge is crisp, and it’s nice to play something that is bright and has a variety of colourful environments and characters compared to other modern games which are obsessed with darkness.
The original release of Soul Calibur created a massive amount of pre-release hype with the announcement that each different console version would have its own guest character. The PlayStation 2 would have Heihachi Mishima from the Tekken series, The Xbox would have comic book antihero Spawn and the Nintendo Gamecube version would have Link from the Legend of Zelda series of games. The announcement created rivalries that would ultimately be settled on the very game that created them. I’m so happy that in Soul Calibur 2 HD, Heihachi Mishima and Spawn can finally settles their differences in the same game. Yes that’s right, Spawn and Heihachi are both in Soul Calibur 2 HD.
Soul Calibur 2 HD Online has a ton of different game modes available, including:
- Arcade Mode
- VS Battle
- Time Attack
- Team Battle
- VS Team Battle
- Online Mode (Ranked and Player Matches)
- Extra Practice (which uses weapons unlocked in Weapon Master)
- Extra Arcade (Arcade Mode using unlocked weapons) and
- Weapon Master Mode.
- The Museum (where you can view artwork and spectate NPC matches)
The real highlight of the original game and Soul Calibur 2 HD, is Weapon Master Mode. Adding additional events to the game’s story, Weapon Master mode sees the player traveling across the land, completing missions and collecting different weapons (each with different effects). Some of the missions also have different conditions which aren’t normally present in the game’s other modes. Some of the challenges include defeating a number of enemies in a row whilst being poisoned, and defeating enemies with only throws.
The Weapon Master mode adds to much depth to a fighting game, and it really is a different experience to the standard game modes. If you’re a fighting game fan but haven’t experienced Soul Calibur’s Weapon Master Mode, you really should check out Soul Calibur 2 HD.
- Tons of content and game modes
- Looks brilliant in widescreen HD
- Weapon Master Mode is back!
When it comes down to it, Soul Calibur 2 HD is the definitive version of one of the best fighting game ever made. Long-time fans will be delighted to return the game’s various modes, as well as take the fight to their friends online. Soul Calibur 2 HD Online is available now for download on XBox LIVE for XBox 360 and the PSN for PlayStation 3.
