It seems as though every time you visit a games store, there’s a new headset available. More and more gamers are wanting to envelope themselves into their games via surround sound headsets, and we are finally beginning to see headsets that not only deliver fantastic sound, but also have some pretty slick extra features as well.
One such headset, is the Rig from Plantronics, which boasts not only state of the art sound quality, but also the ability to plug in your phone or iPod and incorporate their features into your gaming. It sounds ambitious, that’s for sure, but can one headset really pull all that off?
- Color – Black / Red

- Physical attachment – Vertical
- Connection type – Wired (3.5mm)
- In-line remote – Yes
- Drivers per ear – 1
- Microphone – Yes
The Rig’s appearance can be somewhat deceptive, as it looks heavier than it is. While it is light to wear, it has a reliable sturdiness similar to heavier headsets. Available in black (with red ear cups and tags), the Rig will blend in with most people’s gaming rigs and looks a fair bit more stylish than other gaming headsets. The ear cups are comfy, and fit snugly over the ear without sacrificing comfort. The headband is plastic with a soft fabric over it. The ear cup attachments also twist, so you needn’t worry about accidentally breaking them from them bumping around in your bag or from an unfortunate accident.
The Rig is Compatible with PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, smartphones, tablets and Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (though a microphone adaptor is needed on the Xbox One and possibly the PS4), making it quite a handy piece of kit. Not only that, you are able to plug in your iPhone/iPod/MP3 player and listen to your favourite tunes while gaming. You can even take phone calls while your gaming, as the chat microphone will work as a hands-free kit, and if that’s not enough, Dads and mums, you can even plug in your baby monitor so you can be on top of your game while you’re gaming.
The Rig offers three different equalisers to cater to every gamer’s preferences. The first, ‘Pure’, is a standard equaliser that fits most games, the second, ‘Intensity’ adds a more bass-heavy mix, and was perfect for enhancing the awesome atmosphere in Batman: Arkham Origins. Last but not least, is ‘Seismic’, which is an FPS gamers wet dream. Perfect for Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty, you will be able to hear every single pane of glass shatter, and every brick crumble through the heightened bass and treble. Awesome stuff.
When I first read about the ambitious Rig, I doubted that a gaming headset could achieve so much, and it is in fact, much more than a gaming headset. The Rig has two microphones that can be swapped around, depending on what you’re doing with the headset. There is a dedicated gaming microphone, which is more than adequate for your gaming needs, and the inline microphone, which is perfect for using as a hands-free mic for your phone. It makes sense, when your headset sounds this good, you’ll want to take it everywhere with you.
- Fantastic sound quality across games, music and phone calls
- Amazing versatility
- Fantastic value
- Considering it can be used solely with music players, it might have been nice to see a selection of colours.
Plantronics have set a new standard in personal audio with the Rig. It’s an extremely versatile headset that delivers superb audio quality across a number of activities. The perfect gift for any music junkie, gamer or smartphone user, the Rig is a fantastic product.
