Pinball FX 2 – Zen Classics Table Pack
Most video gamers have a certain size game collection. Holding onto to those few titles that they either haven’t completed yet, or one day want to return to. In either case it’s not because there is always more content in the pipeline waiting to be released. That is the absolute beautiful thing about Pinball FX 2. Zen Studios is never content; they are always creating new content. With the latest Pinball table pack, Zen has released to the Xbox 360 four tables that were previously only available on the PlayStation version of the game.
What do I get and why do I want it?
Zen Classics Pack consists of four tables; Tesla, El Dorado, Shaman, and V 12. I have no problem admitting I am an enormous pinball fan. I have played pinball games since I was a kid in arcades (anyone remember those?) It’s a fun look into the progression of Zen Pinball seeing these tables. From the early V 12 table to the more recent Tesla table, the evolution of table design and mechanics is front and center in this pack. There is certainly something here for everyone.
The gem of this pack is hands down the Tesla table. It is the one table for PlayStation that I have always been envious of. The table follows Nikola Tesla’s ideas of electricity and creates missions and challenges that do a phenomenal job of requiring the player to not only hit some precise shots, but also plan ahead. Visually, the table is stunning. Vibrant colors, solid lines, and as always impeccable music and voice work.
My second favorite table from this pack is Shaman. I mean, who hasn’t wanted to play the role of a Witch Doctor via a pinball table! Ok, that may be reaching a little bit, but seriously this table is a blast to play. The primary goal of the table it to cast a series of natural disasters and rack up that high score. Of course, being that it’s a pinball tables it’s not nearly as easy as it sounds. On the surface this table seems relatively simple and easy to score, however, for those truly large scores and you will need to master several challenging shots. Visually the table shows it’s age a little bit. It has been re-mastered, yet with the quality of Zen’s other table it does show a little. Granted, for pinball fans this isn’t an issue to avoid the table but you will notice it.
The El Dorado table is Zen’s attempt at almost an Indiana Jones style table. Exploring Mayan ruins to discover long hidden treasure and avoid an assortment of traps and pitfalls. This is, in my opinion, the easiest table in the pack. It has a fast pace to it, however, the vast majority of the required shots are rather simple and most experienced pinball players will have no trouble hitting them time and time again. The overall simplicity also will allow newer players to get the hang of how Zen pinball plays. Much like Shaman, visually the table is a little dated in appearance.
V 12 the last table in the pack, does not show its age well. This may be more of an issue with how far Zen Studios has come in terms of making pinball tables from their early years to the more recent tables. This is a very simple table, with not a whole lot going on. I liken this table to playing Battlefield 3 and then going back and playing the original Contra. Contra was great when it came out, but with the advancements in games it doesn’t quite hold up like it once did.
How much is it?
A nice clean 800 Microsoft Points.
- The Tesla table. Simply put this table is worth the 800 MSP itself.
- Bang for your buck. 4 tables for 800 MSP. Lots of replay value to always try and have the top score on your friend’s list.
- The V 12 table. Just doesn’t hold up well.
Conclusion – Is it worth it?
Short answer, yes. Keeping in mind that these tables were previously only released on PlayStation it’s nice to finally have them available on Xbox. The replay value for Pinball FX 2 is off the charts. Looking for something to play, that is relaxing but offers a challenge Pinball may be the right choice. The beauty of pinball is you can never truly “beat it”. Working your way up the leaderboards, challenging your friends, and banging away at multi-balls makes this table pack worth it. Fans of Pinball FX 2 no doubt know what they are getting, but this is also a perfect table pack for someone who is looking to start playing as well.
