Mario Kart 8
One of the biggest releases in 2014 will be Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 being handled by Team 1 EAD and the follow up to the 3DS release of Mario Kart 7. The biggest feature in this upcoming Wii U version (besides being the first HD Mario Kart title is the new the anti-gravity gameplay, which allows the Karts to race on walls and ceiling’s offering quick and crafty shortcuts) reminds me of the San Francisco Rush series and of course Nintendo’s other dormant franchise F-Zero. Also returning are the underwater and sky routes in Mario Kart 7 which will add a new dimension to taking risks.
Other features from previous Mario Kart entries include motor bikes, hang gliders and the 12 player online multiplayer. Another new feature, called Mario Kart TV, allows players to use Miiverse to share clips from their races this probably sounds pretty basic but at least for Nintendo fans they are starting to catch up to Microsoft and Sony with some nice online additions.
Controller methods available will be the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Wii U Pro Controller, and also the Wii Wheel. The GamePad helps remove the clutter from the main screen, so race position are displayed alongside a big horn which can be used to distract opponents. Nintendo are aiming for 60 frames per second with four players in 1080p, currently they have two players but will have four by launch. Confirmed characters so far are Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Princess Daisy, Toadette, Wario and Waluigi.
So far the items returning are Item Boxes, Coins, Banana, Triple Bananas, Fire Flower, Green Shell, Triple Green Shells, Red Shell, Triple Red Shells, Spiny Shell, Mushroom, Triple Mushrooms, Golden Mushroom, Star, Thunderbolt, Blooper, Bob-omb and I’m sure there will be more. The tracks we have seen so far include Mario Circuit, a track made of candy and desserts, a ruins track, a residential track (similarities to the city of San Francisco), a haunted mansion track, a desert track and also two retro tracks 3DS Music Park & 3DS Piranha Plant Slide also expect a version of Rainbow Road what Mario Kart would be complete without it!
Without any new characters or items revealed so far it’s hard to judge if the new anti-gravity feature will be enough to make this something special, but in saying that it is Mario Kart it will sell millions but keep in mind Nintendo have a new console they need to push so we can expect to see some more exciting Mario Kart 8 news closer to its April release date early next year!
